Financial Aid For Single Mothers

The life of a single mother can be both challenging and rewarding. Many single moms have to work and raise their children, without the luxury of staying at home while their partner brings home the income. Another thing many single moms do is pursue their education, in order to build a better life for themselves and their children. There is a great deal of financial aid for single mothers available, so if you fit this category it is entirely possible for you to go back to school even with your current personal and financial obligations.

For example, if you work or have child-related obligations that affect your schedule, you can attend school part time, either during the day or the evening. Then there is distance learning, which is done primarily from home in your free time. It may take you longer to get your degree, but for many busy moms it's worth the wait. The first type of financial aid you may want to look into is help for your basic survival needs like housing, food and childcare. There are programs through Social Services and the Department of Health and Human Services that may be able to help lighten your load.

There are many types of education aid available. Federal student loans are very popular because most every student qualifies for them and the interest rates are reasonable. Stafford loans are given to most all students, and as a single mother you will probably qualify for the subsidized version, which means you do not pay interest on the loan until after you leave school. You also don't make loan payments until after you leave school. If you have a high level of financial need, you are a good candidate for the need-based Perkins loan.

Another type of financial aid for single mothers is the grant. One example is the Pell grant. Any type of grant never has to be repaid, it is free money for your education. You should also apply for any scholarships that you can. There are also private loans and programs such as tuition reimbursement through certain employers. Some colleges also have work study programs. These are all ways single moms can do all the things they need to do while getting an affordable education. Whether you want to advance in your current career field or begin a new career, higher education can benefit you in many ways.
